TV Tailgate : Waverly/Sayre/Athens

For the upcoming football season we are planning to host 3 TV Tailgate parties for our chapter.  One will be held in the  Binghamton area, one in the Montrose area and one in the Sayre/Athens area.

We have selected to have the Sayre/Athens TV Tailgate party at the Rail House Restaurant & Taproom at 366 Broad Street in Waverly, NY.  Check out their website!  One of the owners spent some time at Penn State where he learned how to bartend so they know our crowd and appreciate our school!

If you have a suggestion for a great place to watch a Penn State football game, please share your ideas with us by commenting below or via email or facebook.

In the mean time help us decide what weekend to hold the TV Tailgate at the Rail House in Waverly.

What game should we watch at the Rail House in Waverly?

Blue - White Weekend Update

We are just a few weeks away from the Blue - White game in University Park!

Our local Beaver Stadium 5K team, the Greater Binghamton Spiedies, has raised over $600 for the Special Olympics - Pennsylvania.  With every $150 we raise we underwrite the cost of one athlete at the 2013 SOPA Summer Games at Penn State.  We currently have 6 team members: David Byerly, Zachary Egan, Dick Smith, Kurt Steinhauser, Nick Corcoran and Kate Miller-Corcoran. Please consider supporting us or joining us!  You can do so here:  Greater Binghamton Spiedies Team Page.

Kick off is set for the game at noon on Saturday.  Stadium parking lots open at 8am and stadium Gates A, B, C, and E will open for fans at 10:30am.  As in previous years, there will be no admission or parking fee for the Blue-White game.

When you’re on campus don’t forget to stop by the Palmer Museum of Art to view the current exhibition “Lit with Piercing Glances: Linocuts” by our very own chapter member, James Mullen.
Another highlight of the weekend is the NCAA Men’s Gymnastics Championships which will be held at the Bryce Jordan Center.  Team finals are Saturday evening and showcase the 8 best teams in the country going head to head.  With PSU presently ranked 1st this should be an awesome event to attend.  You can link to more information, including ticket prices here or by calling 1-800-NITTANY.

A full list of athletic events for the weekend can be found on the Penn State Athletics website.

Scholarship Recipient Carli Ligouri

Here is the bio of another outstanding recipient of one of our three scholarships from this year, Carli Ligouri:

Carli Liguori is a sophomore at the University Park campus majoring in Nutritional Sciences. In the last year, she has picked up a double minor in Dance and Horticulture. She is a member of the Schreyer Honors College and is currently doing research in nutrition education to complete her honors thesis. While at Penn State, she has become involved with the Penn State Lion Scouts which keeps her very busy giving several campus tours weekly and also returning to the Binghamton area to speak with high school students about Penn State. This past fall she was Homecoming Chair for the organization and had a blast being a part of the largest Homecoming celebration in the country. She has worked as an intern for the Office of Undergraduate Admissions helping to bring a few much needed changes to the old tour system. Touring families can now be seen with small earpieces following a guide with a headset microphone helping to ensure that no detail goes unheard. She is currently employed by Penn State Lion Line, an organization that raises funds for the University while building alumni relations. This summer she will be studying abroad in Dublin, Ireland to complete her Dance minor. She is extremely grateful for all of the opportunities Penn State has afforded her and is excited to see what will happen next!

Scholarship Recipient Scott Johnson, Jr.

Each year our chapter awards three scholarships to deserving undergraduate students. We asked each recipient if they would share a bit about themselves with our chapter.

The first recipient we would like to highlight is Scott Johnson, Jr. from Vestal, NY:

My older sister attended Penn State for Business Management and graduated in 2010. She thouroughly enjoyed her time at Penn State and therefore influenced my decision on what college I would be attending. I attended football games and other activities at University Park and fell in love with the campus and the energy of the student body. Following graduation, from Ross Corners Christian Academy in Vestal, NY, I began studying at Penn State Hazleton as an Information Sciences and Technology student. While there I enjoyed canning with THON and serving as a senator on Hazleton's Student Government Association.

Currently, I am on an exchange program, for one semester, to Sogang University in Seoul, South Korea. Classes just started, but so far I'm loving the country, people, and learning new things about this fascinating culture. When I get back home, I'll be attending University Park in the fall and would love to meet up and express my personal thanks for the scholarship I received!

P.S. If you would like to donate to our scholarship fund please feel free to  use the form located here.
